AI in Hungarian: Formal Address, Business Emails and Translation

AI in Hungarian cover with a bold green poster background and large title text

Using AI in Hungarian works well for everyday writing, replies and translation, and it also exposes the places where a language that is very different from English trips up a machine. Hungarian has a formal and an informal way of addressing people that changes whole sentences, a surname-first name order, suffixes that change with vowel harmony, and a single pronoun for “he” and “she”. An assistant can handle all of that if you tell it what you need, and can quietly get it wrong if you do not.

This guide is for people who write to Hungarian customers, colleagues or officials, translate to and from Hungarian, or study the language. It covers how to prompt in Hungarian or English, how to choose the right level of formality, how to write a business email, the traps in translation, and the checks to run before sending anything that matters. Ask Mio’s website lists Hungarian among its interface languages, and you can ask Mio to write in Hungarian from a prompt in any language.

What makes Hungarian different for an AI assistant

Hungarian is not related to its neighbours Slovak, Romanian, German or Croatian, and its grammar is built on different principles. Four features matter most when you work with an assistant.

Feature What it means Risk when using AI
Formal and informal address Ön (formal) and te (informal) take different verb forms and different set phrases Mixing the two in one message, or using the wrong one for the relationship
Surname first Kovács János: family name, then given name Names reversed in translation; wrong greeting
Agglutination and cases Meaning is built by adding suffixes to words; there are many cases, commonly counted as 18 Wrong suffix after a foreign or unusual name; awkward long words
Vowel harmony Suffixes change to match the vowels of the word, such as házban and kertben Errors with names, brands and loanwords
One pronoun for he and she Ő means both Gender guessed when translating into English; lost when translating into Hungarian
Free word order Order signals emphasis, not just role Correct but oddly stressed sentences

AI in Hungarian: choosing the language of your prompt

You can prompt in Hungarian or in English and ask for Hungarian output. Each has a use.

Prompt in English, get Hungarian output

This is often the clearest way to give complex instructions: audience, tone, constraints and structure are easy to state precisely. Add “write the final text in Hungarian” and specify the register. Then ask for an English back-translation of the key lines so you can check the meaning even if you do not read Hungarian.

Prompt in Hungarian

If you read Hungarian well, writing the prompt in Hungarian tends to produce text that sounds natural, because the assistant mirrors your vocabulary and register. It also lets you test whether the reply fits your own ear. Our guide to non-English AI prompts explains when each approach works best.

A rule that helps either way

State the relationship and formality explicitly: “Write to a customer I have not met, formal, using Ön.” Do not leave it to chance, and ask the assistant to keep it consistent throughout.

Formal and informal address

This is the single most important choice in Hungarian writing. The formal address uses Ön with a third-person verb form, and the informal uses te with second-person forms. The imperative changes too.

Meaning Formal (Ön) Informal (te)
Please send the document Kérem, küldje el a dokumentumot. Kérlek, küldd el a dokumentumot.
Thank you for your help Köszönöm a segítségét. Köszönöm a segítségedet.
Greeting in a letter Tisztelt Uram! / Tisztelt Asszonyom! Kedves Anna!
Closing Tisztelettel, / Üdvözlettel, Üdv, / Szeretettel,

Guidelines for choosing: use formal for first contact, customers, officials, older people and anyone senior to you unless they invite the informal. Use informal with friends, close colleagues and in many modern workplaces, especially younger ones, but follow the other person’s lead. When unsure, begin formally. Ask the assistant to explain why it chose a particular form; this is also a good way to learn.

Writing a Hungarian business email with AI

A reliable method has five steps.

  1. Give the facts in English or Hungarian. Who you are, who the reader is, what you need, deadlines, attachments and amounts.
  2. State the register. For example, formal, polite, brief, no idioms.
  3. Ask for a subject line and a body. Hungarian subjects tend to be short and concrete.
  4. Ask for a check. “List any phrase that sounds too direct, too formal or unusual in Hungarian business writing.”
  5. Read the result aloud or have a native speaker do so for anything important, such as a contract, tender or complaint.

A typical structure

Greeting, one line stating the reason for writing, the details, the request with a date, thanks and a closing. A short example in a formal register: “Tisztelt Uram! Az 1234-es számú megrendeléssel kapcsolatban írok. A számlát mellékletben csatolom, kérem, utalja át az összeget október 31-ig. Köszönettel, Nagy Eszter”. Ask the assistant to produce variations: firmer, softer or more concise.

Dates, numbers and names

Hungarian writes dates year first, as in 2026. október 23., uses a comma as the decimal separator and often a space between thousands. Names appear surname first, so Kovács János is Mr Kovács, and the polite form is Kovács úr. When translating a name from English, ask the assistant to keep the order or reverse it consistently, and to tell you which it did.

Translation traps to check

Translation between Hungarian and English is where small errors multiply. Ask the assistant to flag each of these.

  • Gender. Hungarian ő does not say whether a person is a man or a woman. Translating into English forces a choice. If the source text does not tell you, ask the assistant to mark the assumption instead of silently picking.
  • Formality lost or added. English has no everyday equivalent of Ön and te. When translating into Hungarian, specify the register; when translating into English, ask whether the original was formal.
  • Long compound and suffixed words. A single Hungarian word can carry a whole English phrase. Check that nothing was dropped.
  • Word-order emphasis. A change in order may carry a contrast or stress that a literal translation misses.
  • Idioms. Translate meaning, not words. Ask for the natural equivalent and a literal gloss.
  • Diacritics. The letters ö, ő, ü and ű matter. Old systems sometimes replace ő and ű with õ and û, which look similar and are wrong. Check that the final text uses proper characters, especially after copying between programs.

Names and suffixes

Hungarian attaches case suffixes directly to nouns, including names and foreign words, and the form depends on vowel harmony and sometimes on spelling rather than pronunciation. For common Hungarian names the assistant is usually right. For foreign company names, brands, acronyms and unusual place names, it may guess the wrong suffix. Ask it to list every name that takes a suffix in the text and to show the form it used, then check them with a native speaker or a reliable reference. For brand names, a common workaround is to restructure the sentence so the name stays unchanged, for example “az Ask Mio szolgáltatás” rather than attaching a suffix to the name itself.

Using AI in Hungarian for learning

An assistant is a patient practice partner if you set it up well.

  • Corrections with reasons. Write a paragraph and ask it to correct mistakes, mark each change and explain the rule in one line.
  • Role play. Ask it to play a shopkeeper, a landlord or a colleague and to stay at your level, replying in short sentences.
  • Suffix drills. Request a table of one noun in the main cases, then a quiz with answers hidden.
  • Formal versus informal. Give it a situation and ask for both versions, with notes on when to use each.

Keep a list of corrections in a project or document so the assistant can see your recurring mistakes. Our guide to the best AI for language learning has more methods. Remember that an assistant can be confidently wrong about grammar, so confirm anything important in a grammar book or with a teacher.

Websites and customer service in Hungarian

If you are localising a website or support replies, set rules once and reuse them. Decide on one register for the whole site, build a short glossary of product terms and how they are written, and keep a list of phrases to avoid. Then paste that list at the start of each session or store it in a project. The workflow in how to localize a website with AI applies directly. For support replies, ask the assistant for a polite, concise answer plus a plain English summary so a non-Hungarian reader on your team can approve it.

A worked example: a late-payment reminder

A small supplier needs to remind a Hungarian customer about an overdue invoice.

  1. The supplier writes the facts in English: invoice number, amount, due date, bank details are not to be repeated, tone firm but courteous, formal Ön.
  2. The assistant drafts a short Hungarian email with a concrete subject, a polite reminder, the request to pay by a date and an offer to answer questions.
  3. The supplier asks for an English back-translation and a note on whether the Hungarian is too blunt. The assistant suggests softening one sentence.
  4. The supplier checks the decimal comma in the amount and the date format, and confirms that the greeting uses the formal form.
  5. A Hungarian-speaking colleague reads it before sending, since payment disputes can have legal consequences.

The process takes ten minutes and delivers a message that reads as written by someone who knows the language, with a safety check for the parts that matter.

Cost and plans

Writing and translating are Chat and Write mode work, where a normal reply costs 1 point and a long one 3. The free plan gives 600 points a month, enough to try the workflow. The Chat plan at €5 a month includes 2,000 points, file uploads and memory, so Mio can read a Hungarian PDF you upload and remember your preferred register. Business at €29 a month has 5 seats for a team. These figures come from the live pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI write good Hungarian?

For everyday messages, summaries and routine business writing it is usually fluent and readable. It is weaker with unusual names, suffix choices, specialist terms and tone. Always read the output, or have a native speaker do so, before sending anything legal, financial or public.

How do I make the AI use formal Hungarian?

State it in the prompt: formal register, addressing the reader as Ön, with the third-person verb forms. Ask it to stay consistent and to avoid slang. If the output slips into te forms, point out the line and ask for a corrected full version rather than patching single words.

Can I prompt in English and get Hungarian back?

Yes, and it is a good method for complex instructions. Ask for the final text in Hungarian and for an English back-translation of key lines. That lets you check meaning without reading Hungarian, although a native speaker should confirm important texts.

Why are Hungarian names and suffixes sometimes wrong?

Suffixes depend on vowel harmony and on the form of the word, and foreign names or acronyms break the usual patterns. The assistant may choose the wrong ending. Ask it to list the names with suffixes it used, check them, or rephrase sentences so the name stays unchanged.

Does Ask Mio support Hungarian?

Ask Mio’s website lists Hungarian among its interface languages, and you can write to Mio and request answers in Hungarian. As with any language, test it on your own real texts and rely on a native speaker for high-stakes writing.

How do I avoid wrong letters like õ instead of ő?

Check the final text for ő and ű, and avoid copying through old programs that convert them. If a document shows õ or û, replace them. Ask the assistant to output plain UTF-8 text, and verify a sample after pasting it into your email or website.

The Bottom Line

AI in Hungarian is dependable for drafting and translating when you set the register, check names and suffixes, and ask for a back-translation of what matters. Be explicit about Ön or te, watch gender in translations, and insist on proper diacritics. For contracts, complaints and public texts, finish with a native speaker.
